Police investigating 'smash and grab' theft at local jewelry store


PITTSFIELD -- Police are investigating a "smash and grab" jewelry heist at Merrill Road business that occurred overnight between Saturday and Sunday.

Pittsfield Police said the front window of M. Edward Jewelers, located in the Stop & Shop Plaza on Merrill Road, was smashed and items were swiped from the jewelry display.

The type of jewelry and value is still being determined, said police.

"It's an open and ongoing investigation," said Detective Lt. Michael Grady.

The incident was reported to police at about 7 a.m. on Sunday.
