Police investigating Springfield's first homicide of 2016


SPRINGFIELD >> Police are investigating Springfield's first homicide of 2016 after a man was fatally shot in the city's North End section.

Officers were dispatched to the scene on Brookline Avenue around 5:45 p.m. Monday for reports of a shooting.

Police officials didn't immediately release details regarding the incident, including the victim's identity or any possible motives.

Witnesses at the scene told The Springfield Republican that they heard screaming but no shots.

The street, located on a residential block in the Memorial Square section of the neighborhood, was closed by police. A residence with a driveway leading toward a garage located behind the home was blocked off.

State police assisted Springfield officers at the scene along with an official wearing an FBI Gang Task Force jacket.
