Police locate body of missing Great Barrington woman

GREAT BARRINGTON - An 82-year-old woman who was reported missing Tuesday was found dead Thursday morning in a wooded area behind Fairview Hospital, police said.

The body of Arlene Elliott of Hemlock Hill was found by search teams around 9:30 a.m., according to Police Chief William Walsh.

Police said that Elliott was not a patient at the hospital. She had been described during the search as in failing health.

On Wednesday, police said they did not suspect foul play was involved. Police declined on Thursday afternoon to provide a cause of death.

Elliott's family reported her missing on Tuesday evening.

Police found her car in the CVS Pharmacy parking lot on Main Street. CVS is approximately one mile from Fairview Hospital.

Since Tuesday evening, local police and personnel from numerous agencies were involved in the search to locate Elliott.

Teams were comprised of fire departments from Great Barrington, Stockbridge, Sheffield, along with Environmental Police and the Berkshire Mountain Search and Rescue Team, according to Walsh.

State Police also assisted with aerial search support and the Search and Emergency Rescue Team.

K-9 units from Great Barrington, Williamstown and the state police also were deployed.
