Police: Man calling people with false kidnapping claims

LYNN, MASS. >> Police in northeastern Massachusetts say it has received four different reports of Guatemalan citizens being targeted for a kidnapping scam.

The Daily Item reports the Lynn women have been getting telephone calls from a man with an accent described as Puerto Rican or Dominican.

Police say he's been telling them he belongs to a drug cartel or is a criminal and that a family member has been involved in some kind of incident. He then claims to have injured or kidnapped them and demands that they send him money.

Lt. Rick Donnelly says the best course of action for those targeted is to contact the relative to verify that they're not missing
