WILLIAMSTOWN — Authorities are seeking the public's help in tracking down a suspect in armed robbery incidents Saturday in both Williamstown and Pownal, Vt., about two hours apart.

A masked man brandished a handgun in The Spirit Shop on Cole Avenue at around 8:22 p.m., Williamstown police reported in a release, but the man fled the store after a brief argument with the clerk and without taking any cash or store merchandise.

Vermont State Police are reporting a similar armed robbery at about 10:20 p.m. Saturday at the Stewart's Shop on Route 7, just north of the Williamstown line.

"The male entered the establishment with a black handgun and demanded money from the store employees," police reported in a release. "The male fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of money."

No one was reported injured in either incident.

Williamstown police said they worked with Massachusetts State Police and K-9 units from Dalton and North Adams in attempting to locate the suspect.

The man sought was described as a white male, 5-foot, 11-inches to 6-feet tall, in his mid-30s and wearing a dark gray hooded sweatshirt, black gloves, dark cargo pants and a camouflage hat, with a camouflage mask covering the majority of his face.

In the Pownal robbery, state police were assisted by the Bennington County Sheriff's Office and Williamstown and North Adams police.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Williamstown Police Sgt. Scot McGowan at 413-458-5733, or Vermont State Police at 802-442-5421.
