Porches Inn finally booking room for breakfast
NORTH ADAMS — The Porches Inn had no central location to serve its guests breakfast.
The solution: demolish two of its properties on nearby Veazie Street and construct "Porches Inn Building 9," featuring a 1,010-square-foot dining room and meeting space for customers and their guests.
The plans unveiled Monday by Porches Inn owner Berkshire Hills Development Co. LLC, were approved unanimously by the city's planning board.
The inn will demolish the homes at 10 Veazie St. and 18-20 Veazie St. to make room for the new building.
Building 9 will be "architecturally consistent with the neighborhood" on the side that faces Veazie Street, "although the building as a whole is sort of architecturally interesting," according to Jeffrey Grandchamp, the attorney representing Berkshire Hills at Monday's meeting.
"We're taking both of those down, we're opening it up, creating green space, and putting in one building," Grandchamp said.
The building will not have a kitchen and will not be open to the public. The application indicated the meals are catered.
Planning Board Vice Chairman Paul Hopkins said it sounds like a "great project."
The inn was quiet about its plans as it asked in April for its property on Veazie Street, which had been in a residential zone, to be considered a "CC2" commercial zone — a request that was later approved by the city council and planning board.
Berkshire Hills Development Co., LLC, purchased 18-20 Veazie St. in May 2016 for $95,000 and 10 Veazie St. in 2013 for $75,000, according to records of the Northern Berkshire Registry of Deeds.
The company also owns 22-24 Veazie St., which it purchased in 2011 for $80,000 and 26-28 Veazie St., which it bought in 2008.
Berkshire Hills Development Co., owned by John "Jack" Wadsworth, has made significant investments in the neighborhood surrounding the Porches Inn in recent years, including purchasing and demolishing the former Goodyear Auto Service Center and the River Street Package Store at River Street and Houghton Street. It also purchased the former Homestead Tavern on River Street and funded the creation of the UNO Community Center in its place, opening in 2015.
