Pursue truth with care in Egremont

I was sorry to read that Egremont’s Select Board placed Police Chief Reena Bucknell on paid leave for allegedly creating a "hostile work environment" ["Police chief put on leave," Feb. 21, p. A1].

As a recent criminal justice student at Berkshire Community College, I had the privilege of taking "Women and the Law," a fascinating course she helped develop. Bucknell -- Berkshire County’s first female police chief -- deserves considerable credit for forging an important path that did not previously exist.

But the accusations against her are serious and deserve to be thoroughly investigated. As emotions run high on this issue, I consider myself lucky to live in a country where such allegations may be followed in a clear-headed pursuit of the truth. Nobody should be above the law.
