Quartet of Suns named All-Stars
Four members of the Pittsfield Suns have made Futures League history, as they are part of the league's inaugural All-Star Game.
Brendan Slattery, Chad Funkhouser, Ryan Deitrich and Jimmy Ricoy were named to play in the All-Star Game, which will be played on Thursday in Nashua.
The nine-team league will be divided up into two teams: The Original Four and the New Five. Torrington, Nashua, Seacoast and Martha's Vineyard make up the Original Four. The New Five consists of Pittsfield, Brockton, Wachusett, North Shore and Martha's Vineyard.
The first pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, and will be preceeded by the league's Major League Baseball Scout Day and a hitting skills competition.
Each roster will consist of 25 players, including one player that will be voted on by Futures League fans. Pittsfield infielder Travis Smith is one of the players being voted on.
Fans can go to the Futures League website or to the league's Facebook page to vote. The deadline is tonight.
None of the Suns on the All-Star roster are listed as starters.
Funkhouser was selected as a second baseman, Slattery as a catcher, while Deitrich and Ricoy are both part of the outfield rotation.
The Futures League festivites begin with the Scout Day at 3:30. MLB scouts will be on hand to watch players run the 60-yard dash and throw.
The Original Four will take infield from 4:25-4:35 and the New Five will go from 4:35-4:45. Batting practice will commence for both teams at 4:45 until 5:55.
The hitting skills competition is scheduled from 6:35-7:05.
The NECBL's 19th annual All-Star Game will be played tonight in Montpelier, Vt., at 6:30 p.m.
Outfielder Jeff Roy of the North Adams SteepleCats will start for the West Division All-Stars. Roy is one of five SteepleCats on the West roster.
Pitcher Matt Longfield, the reigning NECBL pitcher of the week, is a reliever for the West and SteepleCats closer Tom Bammann is the West's closer.
Catcher Brett Clements and first baseman Charlie Law are reserves for the West All-Stars.
