NORTH ADAMS — The Greylock Federal Fall Classic 5K was a race of firsts and personal bests.

Brandon Williams of Pittsfield made it back-to-back victories, the veteran runner's first repeat victory on any course.

The first female and fourth overall across the finish line, Amanda Chilson of North Adams and 10-year-old — yes 10-year-old — Ollie Swabey from Clarksburg came in third, both clocking personal best times.

In all, 110 entrants from grade school to retirement age took advantage of ideal running conditions when the race began at noon, an hour before the 61st Annual Fall Foliage Parade.

"There was no wind, low humidity and the rain held off," Williams said.

The standout runner at Taconic High School in Pittsfield 20 years ago captured the race crown in 2015, but he decided to let several others take the early lead, before making a strong push with about a mile to go in the 3.1-mile contest.

"I let a few people get out fast, then attacked the leaders about the two-mile marker," said the 36-year-old who set a pace of 5 minutes and 48 seconds per mile.

Greylock Federal Credit Union, along with The Berkshire Eagle and Berkshire Running Center, sponsored the race that looped from Main Street, south down Curran Highway (Route 8) and back onto Main.

Chilson didn't expect to finish at 19:20, but knew breaking the 20-minute barrier was within reach at the final turn.

"I was definitely feeling very fast," she said. " When I came around the plaza and saw my watch at 18 minutes, so I just sprinted [to the finish.]"

The child prodigy of the local running scene, Swabey continues to turn heads for the casual race fan watching. The youngster from Pine Cobble School clocked an adult time of 18:59, the sub-19 minute run his best ever since he began running competitively three years ago.

Ollie has won two 5Ks and regularly finishes in the top 10. The secret to his early success is getting out of the gate fast and pacing himself on the hills.

"My dad helps, he gave me the strategy," he said.

Ollie was among four of the top-10 finishers under the age of 16, including 15-year-old Thomas Cook coming in second at 18:48 — 10 seconds quicker the 10-year-old.

"[Ollie] is definitely someone to watch for," said Williams, praising the running phenom.

Race proceeds benefit The Eagle's Newspapers in Education program which provides free classroom newspapers or e-papers, upon request, to any teacher in the Northern Berkshire public or private schools, grades K-12.

For the runners, especially the local favorites, their reward is the cheering from the sidelines as they approach the finish.

"Running down Main Street in North Adams loaded with people is exhilarating," Chilson said.
