Book sale to benefit scholarship: A book sale of new and gently used books to benefit the Berkshire Community College Foundation's Overcoming Obstacles Scholarship will be held from 7:30 a.m. to noon Friday in the Susan B. Anthony Lounge at BCC's Main Campus at 1350 West Street in Pittsfield.

Each book will be priced at $1. Selections will include: bestseller, mystery, romance, non-fiction, fiction, self-help, children, young adult, assorted textbooks, nursing textbooks, suspense, biography and more.

The scholarship is given annually to students who have health obstacles and are pursuing a degree. The sale, which is organized and run by Sheriann Stanton, a BCC employee, was created in 2013. Stanton created the scholarship because she had health complications and had to endure chronic pain and multiple operations while pursuing her academic degrees. Free parenting workshops: The Coordinated Family/Community Engagement & CHP Family Network is presenting a free parent workshop series this spring. All programs will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the community room at the CHP campus, 444 Stockbridge Road (Route 7) in Great Barrington. Parents can register for childcare also offered on the campus.

The first workshop, "Keeping Your Child Healthy is a Big Job!" will be held this Thursday, with Dr. Siobahn McNally and Dr. Lara Setti. Topics to be discussed may include immunization, antibiotics and toxins in the home.

The next workshop, scheduled for Wednesday, May 28, is "Calming the Storm." Specialist Jeanine Fitzgerald will talk about managing children's anger issues. On Wednesday, June 4, the workshop, "Understanding Your Child: Tips & Tools for a Constructive Summer" will be offered with take-home summer activity ideas.

Veterans Resource Center opening at MCLA: The Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts will hold a ribbon cutting for its Veterans Resource Center at noon Wednesday in Venable Hall, room 309, at the campus in North Adams.

This center will provide MCLA veterans with the essential components in assessment and screening, general academic support systems, professional and peer support, outreach, student organizations, wellness, and access to training and campus-based computer technology.

MCLA President Mary K. Grant, state Secretary of Veterans' Services Coleman Nee and Secretary of Education Matthew Malone and other elected officials are expected to attend.

Herberg open house: Herberg Middle School in Pittsfield will host an open house program for fifth-grade students and their families from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 30.

Students and families will have an opportunity to meet with school administrators and current sixth-graders. Families will be given a sixth-grade curriculum overview, learn about the many different programs and activities offered at the school, be able to participate in a question and answer session, and take a building tour.
