'PLUCKED FROM THE HEADLINES' >> Next Thursday, Jan. 7, attorney Edward Insley will at 10:45 a.m. moderate "Plucked From the Headlines," as part of The Jewish Federation of the Berkshires' free Connecting with Community series. This interactive discussion will take place at Congregation Knesset Israel in Pittsfield. Info: 413-442-4360, ext. 10. GIRLS LEADERSHIP PROGRAM STARTING >> The Berkshire Festival of Women Writers invites girls ages 13 to 18 to join Director Jennifer Browdy and spoken word poet Grace Rossman in a new program, Butterfly Leadership Circles, whose mission is to empower young women to recognize their potential as leaders.

The writing intensive program sessions will take place from 2-5 p.m. on Jan. 10 in Pittsfield, Feb. 7 in Great Barrington, March 6 in Pittsfield, April 10 in Great Barrington, and May 15 at The Mount in Lenox. Pittsfield sessions will be held at the Unitarian Universalists Church at 175 Wendell Ave. The Great Barrington sessions will be held at the South Berkshire Friends Meeting House, 280 State Road (Route 23).

The cost is $60 per session; $250 for all five. Some partial scholarships are available; additional donors are sought. Info: or
