The public is invited to attend on Saturday a ceremony to mark North Adams' designation as a new "Appalachian Trail Community," part of the day-long North Adams Annual Appalachian Trail Celebration. Hikes begin at 9 a.m., the ceremony and potluck lunch start at noon, and activities continue to about 3 p.m. This free, rain or shine event meets at the Appalachian Trail kiosk located on the north lawn of Greylock Elementary School, 100 Phelps Ave. Select and register for a hike at: https://goo.gl/1ygC9h. Greylock at Bascom Lodge, recently designated by author J.K Rowling ("Harry Potter" series) as the campus of the Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardy. Here, create incantations and music. Berkshire Sanctuaries of Mass Audubon will present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., an "Evening at the Beaver Ponds," led by volunteer Florian "Butch" Ptak, at Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, 472 West Mountain Road in Lenox. Barrington Stage Youth Theatre presents "The Wiz," running this Wednesday, through Sunday, Aug. 14, at the Berkshire Museum, 39 South St., Pittsfield. Performances are at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays; 2 and 7 on Thursdays; 7 on Fridays; 2 on Saturdays and Sundays; with matinees at 2 on Aug. 3 and 10. Jennifer Lovett, conservation biologist, artist, author, and nature journalist, will at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, lead a hike and journaling expedition of the Clark Art Institute's trails in Williamstown.
