Red Cross to close Pittsfield office, sell building on West Street
PITTSFIELD — The American Red Cross is shutting down its office operations in Pittsfield and will put the building at 480 West St. up for sale.
According to Jessica Emond, director of communications in the state office in Cambridge, the organization's last day in the Pittsfield office will be April 8, after which the only Western Massachusetts office will be located at 150 Brookdale Drive in Springfield.
"Our last Nursing Assistant Training (CNA) class will graduate around April 1," she said in an email. "Individuals interested in taking CNA classes, lifeguard training or CPR should visit our website, at RedCross.org/ma, to locate local classes."
Emond said the Red Cross disaster response services will remain in place, as they are delivered by a volunteer team based in the Pittsfield area, with a full-time staff member in the Springfield who can respond if needed.
"The Red Cross remains committed to providing the community with needed health and safety training, as well as Disaster Response, Service to the Armed Forces, Blood Services and International services," Emond said.
The organization began consolidating the regional services into the Springfield location in 2014, and has maintained a small office in Pittsfield with one employee. The consolidation is designed to realize a cost savings and direct more spending toward services, she said.
Services listed include Disaster Cycle Services, Biomedical Services, Service to Armed Forces, International Services, Preparedness, Health and Safety Services (including training and certification classes) and Volunteer Services.
Local disaster response teams are maintained throughout the state, she said.
Emond said community partners of the Red Cross have been notified of the pending closure.
