Reindog Parade in Williamstown a sign of the season

Sunday December 2, 2012

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Santa Claus traded his iconic reindeer and sleigh on Saturday for a fire truck and more than 100 Berkshire County dogs dressed in various holiday attire.

Thousands of people filled the sidewalks of Spring Street to watch canines of all shapes, sizes and ages strut down the road during the annual Reindog Parade, which kicks off the town's Holiday Walk.

"This is just a great way to start the holidays and the kids absolutely love it," said Donna Narey, of Williamstown, who stood with her 7-year-old son Cole.

Cole's eyes lit up at the sight of Dagan, a two-year-old greater Swiss mountain dog pulling her own sleigh with a stuffed Santa in two.

With the light dusting of snow still on many of the storefronts, Spring Street looked like a giant snow globe illuminated by the street lamps and flashes from cameras as those in the crowd tried to capture an image of their favorite dog.

Terri and Jeff Daignault, of Adams, walked with their two French bulldogs, Willie and Sheldon, each dressed in antlers and Christmas sweaters.

For the couple it was their first time bringing their dogs to the parade.

"It's a little nerve racking with all the other dogs here but everyone has been great," Terri said prior to the event.

For the Brandriss family, the parade signaled the start of their holiday season.

Owen Brandriss said he, his parents and their 11-year-old dog Boris, have been a part of the parade for the last six years, ever since they adopted Boris from the Berkshire Humane Society, one of the organizers of the event.

"It's a great tradition for us and Boris loves it, despite having to wear a costume," Owen said.
