Rescuers recover man’s body from gorge in Troy, N.Y.
TROY, N.Y. -- Rescuers on Monday recovered the body of a man from a gorge that runs through this city’s downtown.
The man, whose name and age were not released, was reportedly found under a ledge in the water at the bottom of the Poestenkill Gorge. The man was with his girlfriend, who went and sought help after losing sight of him, the Troy Record reports.
The man had disappeared underwater in the pools while either hiking or swimming with his girlfriend, Troy Fire Chief Tom Garrett said. The girlfriend ran to a nearby business to report the emergency at approximately 12:30 p.m.
New York State Police located the body at around 5 p.m.
The search and recovery effort was dangerous. A Troy Fire Department Rescue Squad member rapelled 200 feet into the gorge, and a New York State Police diver later arrived on the scene to aid in the effort.
It appeared that the couple was trespassing, according to Troy Fire Chief Tom Garrett. Water was not particularly high on Monday.
Garrett said that similar incidents happen about once a year.
