BOSTON >> A team of researchers led by a UMass Amherst scientist has been awarded a $6.25 million Department of Defense grant as part of the agency's Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative.

The funding, dispersed over a five-year period, will aid the team as they try to understand how chemical processes go from molecular to macroscopic.

Thai Thayumanavan says his team will attempt to gain an understanding of the chemical processes to see how they could assist in developing new technologies.

He says one of the ways his team's work could prove beneficial is the development of a chemical-resistant shirt for the military.

The team consists of researchers from the University of Chicago, the University of Wisconsin and the University of California San Diego.
