Return two to Hancock school board

Saturday May 12, 2012

I am writing this as a 15-year Hancock School Committee member who stepped down last year and a life-long resident of the town. I am very concerned about the information that has been passed around town concerning our school and the children at the school. I feel that it is flawed and the results are skewed.

Due to our small school population, the state has often not even reported our MCAS re sults because they are not reliable. At times, we have had only 20 students in grades 3 through 6 testing, and we only had 23 this year.

As a former committee member and currently in the school building several hours every week, I am very aware of all of the support services that are in place to help our children who are struggling academically. It is to a student’s disadvantage when parents don’t take advantage of these resources.

Hancock School has had numerous teachers retire in the last few years after having taught at our sweet, little school for 25-35 years. We now have almost a totally new staff. I have great confidence in them and our principal, Jean nie Filiault. I also trust that our newly hired superintendent will be a good addition to our school. All three of my sons went through Hancock School. Two of them made National Honor Society in high school. I would send them to our school again in a second.

I have extreme confidence in the two committee members, Patty Bishop and Mark Gaskill, who are up for re-election. They have been dedicated, hard-working committee members and have seen us through many different issues, tuition negotiations and projects over the years and will continue to steer us through this storm. I will be voting for them Monday, May 14, and hope that you will join me.
