Revere officer injured by drunken driving suspect

SAUGUS, MASS. >> A Revere police officer was taken to the hospital after an allegedly drunken driver struck his cruiser in a work zone on U.S. Route 1 in Saugus.

Authorities say a 43-year-old Newburyport man "ignored all warning signs, arrow boards, and police lights warning him to move over" and rear-ended the cruiser in the southbound lanes early Thursday morning.

The cruiser was on a pothole repair detail in the right travel lane.

The injured officer was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston with what were described as minor injuries.

The cruiser was totaled.

No names were released.

The crash remains under investigation.
