Rhode Island man dies in powered paraglider plunge in Massachusetts
NEWBURYPORT, Mass. (AP) -- Officials say a Rhode Island man has died when his powered paraglider plunged into the Merrimack River off Plum Island.
The unidentified 49-year-old man died on Saturday.
Brian Fleming, command duty officer for Coast Guard Sector Boston, said the man was in the water about 20 to 30 minutes from the time the engine on his paraglider quit until he was pulled from the water by a Coast Guard lifeboat.
Newburyport police say two of the man’s friends tried to go into the water to save him, but retreated because of the cold.
An autopsy is pending. Police did not immediately identify the man.
