Rhode Island man gets 19 years for Fall River shooting

FALL RIVER, MASS. >> A Rhode Island man has been sentenced to at least 19 years in prison for fatally shooting a Fall River man in 2014.

The Herald News reports that William Tate, of East Providence, was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years to life for second-degree murder, followed by a consecutive three- to five-year sentence for illegal possession of a firearm and a one-year sentence for unlawful possession of a loaded firearm.

Tate was convicted earlier of killing 26-year-old David Rodriguez, a father of four, on Jan. 4, 2014.

Tate's lawyer says his client went to a Fall River apartment complex to see Rodriguez's sister, and the men had a confrontation. The defense lawyer says Tate thought the cellphone Rodriguez was holding was a gun.
