Road signs, lighting need upgrade

Wednesday December 5, 2012

It is my experience that the lighting and signage on the roads in Berkshire County are in need of improvement. At intersections like Holmes Road and Pittsfield Road, it is hard to see the traffic island when turning left onto Holmes Road while traveling south on Pittsfield Road. It is a problem at many intersections.

One solution is to use highly reflective signs and reflectors in the road like portions of Route 7 between Stockbridge and Lenox. The local street signs are also useless at night because they do not reflect light from headlights and cannot be seen.

A few years ago, the town I lived in replaced all the street signs with highly reflective materials. To defray some of the cost, the old signs were sold at auction on eBay. It was a great success. Let’s upgrade our street signs and intersections and make the Berkshires safer for everyone.
