Roundup: MCLA men's cross-country places first at Mountaineer Invitational

BENNINGTON, Vt. — The MCLA men's cross-country team started its season strong, placing five runners in the top 15 en route to a first-place finish at the Mountaineer Invitational on Saturday.

Senior Jeremiah Jones led the way, finishing the 5k fourth overall with a 18 minute, 27 second time. MCLA just edged out Castleton for first place. The Trailblazers finished with 47 points, while the Spartans finished with 48 points.

The MCLA women finished in sixth place at the Invitational. Freshman Julie Gambill was the top MCLA finisher, placing 13th overall with a 25:59 time.

The teams will compete at the Castleton Invitational next Saturday.

Volleyball

POMONA, Calif. — The MCLA volleyball team ended its four-game California trip with a doubleheader loss to Occidental College and Chapman University, respectively. The Trailblazers lost both matches 3-0.

Against Occidental they lost 9-25, 15-25, 10-25. They lost to Chapman 15-25, 11-25, 11-25.

Maggie Allen and Sara LaFreniere led MCLA with four kills each against Occidental. Brooke Queripel led MCLA with six kills against Chapman.

MCLA returns home to face Mount Holyoke on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Women's Soccer

Rivier 1, MCLA 0

NORTH ADAMS — The MCLA women's soccer team dropped it home opener to Rivier University.

The Raiders' defense held up well against the Trailblazers' offense. MCLA out-shot Rivier 22-7, but Lauren Goodspeed made nine saves for the clean sheet.

Carley Bostwick scored the lone goal in the 40th minute off a feed from Cheyanne Keets.

Hoosac Valley graduate Meg Richardson made three saves for MCLA.

The 'Blazers will try for their first win of the season on Tuesday at 4 p.m. against Saint Joseph of Connecticut.
