Route 8 accident takes life of woman

Saturday July 23, 2011

ADAMS -- A woman from the North County town of Florida was killed after the pickup truck she was driving crashed into the rear of a tractor-trailer on Friday afternoon.

The woman's name was not immediately released on Friday afternoon.

According to police, both were heading north on Route 8 when the tractor-trailer slowed and signaled to turn into Specialty Minerals Inc. Apparently, the driver of the Chevy Avalanche pickup truck slammed into the back of the truck, wedging the front of her truck underneath the vehicle.

"The tractor trailer's turn signal was on at the time of the accident," Adams Police Chief Donald Poirot said. "In fact, it was still on when I got to the scene."

The accident, which occurred near the railroad crossing, happened at about 12:22 p.m.

Adams Police, the Adams Ambulance Service, the Alert Hose Co., North Adams Police and Massachusetts State Police all responded to the crash. Passersby made multiple 911 calls to alert authorities.

Cheshire's Hoosac Hose Co. was called for assistance in extricating the woman from the vehicle.

While it is still unknown if the woman died on impact or as a result of injuries caused by the wreck, she was declared dead at the scene.

The State Police Accident Reconstruction Team was called in to investigate the crash.
