Saturday's Babe Ruth: N. Adams 14s and Pittsfield 15s win
PITTSFIELD -- North Adams is a win away from the 14-year-old Babe Ruth county championship.
In five innings, North Adams beat Pittsfield 16-1 Saturday at Deming Park. An eight-run second inning lifted the victors, who got three RBI from Kareem Beckett and a one-run, four-hit pitching performance from Brody Altiere.
Altiere, Schuyler Rolanson and Jesse Dilego had two hits each for the winners (2-0). Pittsfield's lone run came in the third, when Pat Tierney drove in Joe Puia.
The teams play again today at noon at Deming; Pittsfield (1-1) must win that game to force an ‘if' game 20 minutes after the completion of the first game.
Meanwhile, Pittsfield reversed that score, defeating North Adams 16-1 at Joe Wolfe Field in North Adams in the Babe Ruth 15-year-old tournament.
Steve Witkowski fired a three-hitter, walking one and striking out three to collect the win. Mitch Clary, Joey Dewey, Dan Traversa and Anthony Jones all had three hits for Pittsfield. Traversa had two doubles and he and Clary had three RBI each. Ian Brink had two of North Adams' four hits.
Pittsfield finished 3-0 in pool play, and will face North Adams again in the championship game at 7 p.m. on Monday night at Alcombright Field in North Adams.
