Section of Route 8 closed by landslide reopens
NORTH ADAMS - Beaver Street reopened Monday following a week's worth of work to clear landslide debris.
The section of Beaver Street (Route 8), just several hundred feet from the Clarksburg line, was closed completely April 15 after a landslide cut off an important artery between the communities. The slide was caused by heavy rain.
Crews were on the site through the day Monday, excavating debris around the road and checking its stability, according to North Adams Mayor Richard Alcombright.
The entirety of the two-lane road is now open Alcombright said, with a series of double barriers on each side for support. If any more debris slides down, the barriers would be in place to prevent it from coming into the road. The road is narrowed, Alcombright said, but both lanes should be open.
"We're pretty confident right now as they're digging that we can get that as stable as possible without massive wall work," Alcombright said.
Crews cleared spaces on both sides of the road on Monday, leaving ample room for power lines in case of another slide, Alcombright said. Forecasted rain this week should not be a problem, he said, because the ground now seems firm nearby.
Avoiding major work to the adjacent retaining wall will allow the road to reopen sooner, Alcombright said. As for a long-term plan, the city will likely look at bringing in an engineer to assess the area - and avoid similar incidents in the future.
"We'll probably have state come back out and reevaluate it," Alcombright said.
Fixes to the retaining wall could be costly, Alcombright said, if its determined to be necessary.
The work is expected to total about $10,000, Alcombright estimated. The city is projecting a budget of about $700,000 this year for road fixes.
