"Selfie": Dove short film featuring Monument Mountain students goes viral
GREAT BARRINGTON - "Selfie" is trending on Facebook.
The 7-minute short film, featuring 18 Monument Mountain students and their mothers, went viral on social media platforms across the Internet after debuting at the Sundance Film Festival last week.
Academy Award-winning filmmaker Cynthia Wade shot the short film for Dove's "Real Beauty" ad campaign in Great Barrington last November. During the filming, she asked the girls and their mothers to take "selfies" - an Internet trend of taking a photo of oneself - of part of their bodies they perceived to be problematic. The photos were then enlarged and displayed in a gallery in Great Barrington.
"We don't have to accept traditional media's definition of beauty," Wade told the Eagle in November. "We can move this new generation into a place where beauty is defined in a more broad and inclusive way. You don't have to be a certain type of beautiful."
