Shark spotted by fisherman in Cape Cod Bay

Thursday August 16, 2012

SANDWICH, Mass. (AP) - There's been another shark sighting in the waters off Cape Cod, but for the first time this summer, it was on the bay side of the peninsula.

Fisherman Jeffrey Richardson of Sandwich says he was looking for tuna the other day when his crew saw a shark about three miles off the coast of Barnstable.

Richardson took pictures and video of the fish, which he estimated to be about 12 feet long.

The top state shark expert in Massachusetts says based on his initial viewing of the video, he's pretty sure it was a great white.

Greg Skomal of the state Division of Marine Fisheries says it's unusual to see sharks in Cape Cod Bay.

A great white bit a swimmer off a Truro beach late last month.
