Sheffield: Historical Society to present Valentine’s program

Posted

The Sheffield Historical Society will present "Courtship and Marriage in Early America" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, at Dewey Hall, Route 7 on the Sheffield Green.

Gillian Hettinger and Joyce Hawkins will narrate just how marriages came about from the early New England colonies when one’s life partner was largely chosen by one’s parents, to the later freedoms to choose one’s own mate after the American Revolution.

Also included will be readings from the 1816 love letters of Harry Sedgwick of Stockbridge and his Boston fiancé, Jane Minot, as well as a selection of early 19th century love songs.

The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Information: (413) 229-2694.
