Shots fired in Springfield, teen taken into custody

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. >> Police have arrested a teenager who they believe was the gunman behind an incident of shots fired in Springfield's McKnight section.

Capt. Robert Strempek tells The Republican newspaper the teen fired several shots from a .22-caliber semi-automatic pistol near the intersection of Bay Street and Girard Avenue around 4:03 p.m. Wednesday.

No one was hurt in the incident. Strempek says the teen didn't appear to have an intended target.

The shots activated police's Shotspotter technology and officers were dispatched to the area. They searched for about a half-hour before finding the teen, who fled toward Oak Grove cemetery before being apprehended.

Police say the teen's gun was discovered in bushes several blocks from where the shooting occurred.
