Six months in jail for man who assaulted family member in Otis

GREAT BARRINGTON >> A Huntington man has been sentenced to six months in jail for assaulting a family member in Otis and then battling police after his arrest.

Cobey J. Krupa, 32, allegedly assaulted the woman at her residence on Sept. 4 after she refused to drive him home, according to a state police report.

State Trooper James Sommerville responded about 4:30 p.m., and after talking with the victim, he located Krupa walking on the road, according to the police report.

Under questioning from Sommerville, Krupa initially denied assaulting the woman. It also appeared that Krupa had been drinking, the report said.

Sommerville placed the man in protective custody and returned to the victim's home, and the woman explained that when she told Krupa she could not give him a ride, he struck her twice and head-butted her.

When Krupa learned he was being arrested, he became enraged and began to battle with police until he was subdued with pepper spray.

En route to the Lee state police barracks, Krupa informed told Sommerville he was a diabetic and had not had his insulin since the morning. He was transported to Berkshire Medical Center, where his blood sugar reading was 571, an extremely high level.

While at BMC, Krupa again became combative and had to be restrained. He was eventually stabilized and transported to the Lee barracks, where he was booked.

He was found guilty in Southern Berkshire District Court on Thursday to one count each of assault and battery on a family member and resisting arrest.

Judge Paul Vrabel sentenced him to six months in the Berkshire County Jail and House of Correction. He was given 24 days credit for time served.
