Posted

A half-dozen Berkshire County wrestlers, including three from Western Massachusetts Division III champion Taconic, are in Reading today for the first day of the MIAA All-State Tournament.

Competition begins at Reading Memorial High School at 4:30 p.m., and will run until 9:30. The weigh-ins are scheduled for 3 p.m. Competition in the first day will continue through the quarterfinals and second round consolations.

The remaining wrestlers will be back on the mats for third-round consolations at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Semifinals will be held from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m, with the championships set to start at 3:45.

Isiah Williams, the Western Mass. Division III champion at 152 pounds, will lead the three man Taconic delegation to Reading. Williams will open up against Jared Garcia of Marshfield. The winner will face either Chelmsford's Davey Goodall or the winner of the opening bout between Michael Francis of Boston Latin and Sean Mavilla of Cohasset.

Taconic's Zabion Powell will be the first wrestler on the mat from Berkshire County, and he'll wrestle Pablo Ogata of Framingham at 132 pounds. The winner of that bout will face the winner of the bout between Jose Berrios of Dean Tech and Joe Sanchez of Central Catholic. Berrios is the Western Mass. champion at 132.

The third Taconic wrestler is heavyweight Dalton Peck. Peck, in his first year as a wrestler, will open his competition against Alfonso Depalma of Xaverian. The winner of that will face Josh Sokol of Hopkinton.

The other Western Mass. champion from Berkshire County is Mount Greylock's Alex Griffis. The 195-pounder will open against Phill Kimera of Chelmsford, with the winner facing either Jake Kennedy of Nashoba Regional or the winner of the bout between Spencer Kozlak of Agawam and Matt Dunn of Dedham. Somewhere along the line, Griffis could face Monument Mountain's Bart Christiano, who will wrestle Aidan Bertram of Silver Lake in the opener. Griffis and Christiano are on opposite sides of the bracket.

Mount Greylock's Devin Pelletier, wrestling at 160, is scheduled to face James Kilgo of Nashoba Regional in his opener. The winner will see either Joe Vecchione of Chelmsford or Cole Sullivan of Cohasset in the quarterfinals.

Nate Cormier of Monument will wrestle at 140, and the Spartan will see Bobby McCarthy of Lowell in the opener. The winner will face Lukas Kaminski of Hopkinton.
