Smoking hurts downtown efforts

Applause to Berkshire Com munity College for considering a campus ban on smoking. Perhaps downtown Pittsfield will follow the lead.

Upstreet, Third Thursdays, First Fridays and so on are shrouded in a haze of second- hand smoke. The hundreds of thousands spent on the beautification of North and South streets is contaminated by butt litter in and out of the elaborate sidewalks. Smoke gets in my eyes, lungs and clings to my clothes after a short walk in Pittsfield.

If I didn’t live and work in the area, I wouldn’t chance the risk. If the mayor of New York City can ban giant sodas Š
