South Mountain Road to re-open Thursday

PITTSFIELD -- South Mountain Road will re-open to the public on Thursday, according to a City Hall news release.

The road has been closed since August 2011, while a 2,100-foot section of South Mountain was completely overhauled and moved to the north. The road work allowed for a runway extension and safety area expansion at the nearby Pittsfield Municipal Airport.

The Bianchi administration, in its news release, said only minor cosmetic work scheduled for spring remains to be done. City officials also have inspected the road before its re-opening.

In the news release, City Councilor Jonathan Lothrop said the project "demonstrates that neighborhood input can result in positive changes, as the original proposal was to close the road forever."

The road was originally scheduled to re-open by Dec. 1, but weather delays in the fall forced a delay.
