Spineless pols ignore will of people
Ninety percent of Americans, as documented in multiple polls, want tighter restrictions when it comes to background checks on gun sales at shows and gun sales over the Internet. Ninety percent. Yet Wednesday, the U.S. Senate voted down the enhanced gun sale background check legislation that would have made that happen. To quote President Obama from an emotional speech after the announcement of the vote, "Ninety percent of the Senate Democrats voted yes for the measure and 90 percent of the Senate Republicans voted no for the measure Š"
Why is it when the overwhelming majority of the citizenry of this country understands the need and wants action taken with respect to gun control, that a handful of so-called representatives of the people block any attempt to make that same citizenry safer? Well, I’ll tell you why. These spineless politicians are more concerned about their reelection in the near future than the general welfare of American people, more concerned about the letter grade the NRA might bestow upon them than the safety of the same people who put them in office, more concerned about themselves than us.
President Abraham Lincoln once gave a speech on a battlefield in Gettysburg stating "that the government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from this earth Š" After the shameful travesty that occurred in the U.S. Senate chambers Wednesday, it is difficult to make the argument that Lincoln’s concept of our government still exists.
