Springfield: Allen Bird Club plans field trips


Shore birds are migrating through the region in August, offering a head start on the upcoming fall birding season. The Allen Bird Club has scheduled three birding trips open to everyone, including beginners.

Bird the Connecticut River by boat or kayak on a three-quarter-day trip on Saturday, Aug. 20. Participants need to bring their own boat. For more information, visit www.allenbirdclub.org and click on "Field Trips."

On Saturday, Aug. 27, there will be a three-hour trip to Longmeadow and Agawam to look for shorebirds, egrets, and herons, among other species. Participants should meet at Pynchon Point Park on River Road in Agawam at 7:30 a.m.

A special evening Night Hawk Watch is planned at the Stebbins Refuge in Longmeadow. Visit the website after the middle of August for the exact date. Participants will meet at the sign at the intersection of Bark Haul and Pondside Roads in Longmeadow at 6:30 p.m.
