Springfield man with 37 convictions denies new charges

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. >> A 36-year-old Springfield man with 37 criminal convictions has pleaded not guilty to drug and gun charges in the western Massachusetts city.

The Springfield Republican reports Joshua Diaz denied charges of possessing marijuana, heroin and an illegal handgun Thursday in Springfield District Court.

Assistant District Attorney Cary Szafranski says troopers found Diaz with two packets of heroin, 72 grams of marijuana and a loaded .38-caliber pistol during a traffic stop.

Prosecutors say most of Diaz's crimes are drug related, although he has also been arrested on gun and breaking and entering charges as well.

Defense attorney Yvonne Vidal says Diaz cooperated with police and admitted he had drugs in the car. She says her client was driving his girlfriend's car and was unaware of the gun.
