Springfield: Stand Down connects veterans with resources

Veterans attending the 27th Western Mass Stand Down from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at the Greek Cultural Center, 22 St. George Road, will be exempt from certain fees from the state Registry of Motor Vehicles.

An opening ceremony at 9 a.m. will honor Vietnam veterans. Lunch will be served from 1 to 2 p.m.

The one-day event connects veterans and their families with resources to improve their quality of life and to provide information and referrals and available services to assist them in the future.

RMV fees that will be exempt for former military service members who qualify under Mass. General Law as a veteran include learners' permits, license renewals, duplicate licenses and IDs, and Massachusetts IDs.

Representatives will be on hand to help veterans with obtaining a driver's license or with applying for a Massachusetts ID.

Free legal advice, financial counseling, haircuts, clothing and insurance information will also be available.

Veterans are encouraged to bring their DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, to access services. Veteran representatives will be available to assist veterans in need of locating their DD Form 214.
