St. Joe's Nugai qualifies for W. Mass. swimming; Monument sweeps Taconic Hills
GREAT BARRINGTON -- It was a good day for the Monument Mountain swim teams.
The Spartans earned a sweep of visiting Taconic Hills on Friday. The boys had a narrow 85-81 win while the girls won 90-79.
"We had to get the last relay to beat them," said Monument coach Jill Svirida.
The Spartans went out and won that relay by 21 seconds.
Individually, three Monument swimmers had double-win days. Will Palmer won the 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, Dominic Roy won the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle, while Derrek Rueger won the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly.
The girls race was tied after the 200, 50 and 100 freestyles.
"At the [break] I told them they had to step up," said Svirida, "and they did."
The Spartans were up by nine points heading into the final relay and clinched the victory with a win in that event.
Maeve Wilber won the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, while Rowan Rice took the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly.
Mt. Anthony sweeps St. Joe's
PITTSFIELD -- St. Joseph's swimmer Katie Nugai qualified for the Western Massachusetts swim meet with her win in the 100-yard freestyle, but visiting Mount Anthony swept the meet from the Crusaders.
Mount Anthony's boys won 54-36, and the girls won 59-35.
Nugai's time of 1:01.19 was good enough for a trip to Springfield later this month, and more than enough for one of her two individual wins. Nugai also took first in the 100 breaststroke.
Mount Anthony's Heather Foley had a double-win day with victories in the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly.
Brandon Engle had a good day for the St. Joe's boys. He finished first in the 100 butterfly and the 500 freestyle.
