Standoff at Baystate Medical Center ends in suicide

SPRINGFIELD (AP) - Springfield police say a man involved in a four-hour standoff in a hospital parking lot has shot and killed himself.

Police spokesman Sgt. John Delaney said in a statement on the department's Facebook page early Wednesday that the 54-year-old man was pronounced dead about 12:25 a.m. at Baystate Medical Center about four hours after negotiators began trying to talk him into giving up his gun.

Delaney says the man shot his wife in West Springfield Tuesday night after an argument, and brought her to the emergency room. He then returned to his car and pointed a gun at his head.

He says the woman is in good condition and is expected to recover.

No hospital patients or employees were in danger.

The man's name has not been released.
