State investigating killing of moose near Quabbin Reservoir
BELCHERTOWN — The state is investigating after a moose was illegally killed near the Quabbin Reservoir and a private sportsman's club is offering a reward for information that leads to a conviction in the case.
Ray Mainville, president of the Swift River Sportsman's Club in Belchertown, tells The Republican newspaper that club members put up the $500 reward because they're "highly upset." He called the shooter an "idiot."
The cow moose was shot last weekend. The carcass was discovered by a couple out trying to catch a glimpse of a moose.
A cow with a calf had been spotted on club grounds recently, but it's unclear if it's the same one.
A spokeswoman for the state Environmental Police says it's illegal to kill a moose in Massachusetts, and punishable by up to six months in prison.
