SteepleCats beat Vermont, win second straight game


MONTPELIER, VT. >> The North Adams SteepleCats' relied on their offense for a 7-2 win over the Vermont Mountaineers on Tuesday.

The SteepleCats, who play a doubleheader Wednesday at Holyoke against the Valley Blue Sox have now won two straight.

Easton Johnson started the scoring for the 'Cats, plating Edward Haus with a sacrifice play in the first inning. He added a two-run single in the second.

That was enough support for starter Peter Lannoo to earn the win. He went six innings, scattered seven hits and struck out two. Three 'Cats relievers pitched the final three innings, allowing two hits and one earned run.

Dustin Shirley, Haus and Johnson had two hits each. Nick Riotto had three hits and two runs scored.

Cal Ripken


PEPPERELL >> The Berkshire Cal Ripken 11U All-Stars finished third in the state with a 12-6 loss to Pepperell on Sunday.

Berkshire jumped ahead quickly, scoring three times in the first inning off three walks and two errors.

Cliff Flynn's double plated Brendan Armstrong in the fourth inning, putting Berkshire up 4-0. It was all Pepperell from there on, however, as the host scored nine times in the bottom half of the inning. They added three more runs in the fifth.

Jack Clarke's RBI triple in the fifth scored Berkshire's final run. Armstrong went 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
