SteepleCats end five-game losing streak

NEW BEDFORD -- The North Adams SteepleCats got 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief from Jonathan Mulford to beat New Bedford 2-1 Sunday night, ending a five-game losing streak.

Mulford came on in relief of Dylan Silva with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth inning. Silva had given up a run on Walker Moses' double and loaded the bases when Joshua Smith walked on a 3-2 pitch.

But Mulford got David Mackinnon to ground into an inning ending double play. That made the score 2-1.

The SteepleCats took the lead in the first inning as Josh Delph and J.C. Cardenas led off with singles. Delph scored as Kyle Richardson grounded into a double play.

In the second, Ramon Valdez led off with a double and scored when Matthew Schmidt reached on an error by shortstop Michael Gilbert.

After that, New Bedford starter James Gutwoski and reliever Jimmy Davitt shut the SteepleCats down. But Mulford did the same.

The tying run reached in the bottom of the ninth inning when Lorenzo Papa hit a one-out single, but Moses grounded into a game-ending double play.

North Adams had only five hits in the game, and Cardenas had two of them.
