Suspect in near-fatal Pittsfield stabbing arraigned in Superior Court
PITTSFIELD — A city man accused in a near-fatal stabbing in April was arraigned in Berkshire Superior Court on Wednesday after being indicted by a grand jury.
Selvin O. Gonzalez-Castillo, 22, allegedly stabbed a 29-year-old man, leaving him "very close to death," according to prosecutors.
Castillo's presence at the proceeding was waived by request of his attorney, Glenn W. Keiderling, who claimed there is a potential identification issue in the case,
Police were dispatched to 108 Linden St. about 7:24 p.m. April 23 for a report of a stabbing victim lying on the sidewalk.
When they arrived, a bystander was performing CPR on the victim, who suffered a stab wound to the abdomen and at least one more to the forearm.
Police believe the attack was "sustained and purposeful," and "intended to inflict mortal injury," based on the multiple stab wounds and their severity.
"He was intending to kill this individual," Assistant Berkshire District Attorney Megan Tesoniero said at Castillo's district court arraignment in April.
Tesoniero said the victim required 14 units of blood and several surgeries as a result of his wounds.
Castillo was arrested based in part on witness identification, including one person who selected Castillo's photo from a group of eight pictures.
"I'm 100 percent positive that's him," the witness told police.
Keiderling entered not guilty pleas on Castillo's behalf on charges of armed assault with intent to murder and aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
Judge Maureen Hogan ordered Castillo held on the same $50,000 bail set in the lower court.
A pretrial conference in the case is set for Sept. 13.
The investigation was conducted by members of the Pittsfield Police Department.
