Suspect sought in armed robbery at Credit Union of the Berkshires in Pittsfield
PITTSFIELD — City police are searching for a man who robbed the Credit Union of the Berkshires on Williams Street on Tuesday afternoon.
Witnesses told police a man "entered the bank, brandished a weapon, demanded cash and made off with an undisclosed amount of currency," according to a release from Pittsfield Police Sgt. John Soules and Chief Michael Wynn.
Police did not specify what type of weapon was used.
No one was injured in the robbery, according to credit union CEO and Treasurer Melissa Morin, who said police had advised her not to comment further. She said the bank, which was closed after the 12:30 p.m. robbery, will reopen on Wednesday morning.
Several people in the Williams Street Plaza afterward said they saw a large police response shortly after the robbery.
The suspect was described as a white male in his early 40s with "scruffy" facial hair, wearing large dark sunglasses and a gray baseball cap with dark curly hair sticking out.
He was approximately 5 feet, 10 inches to 5 feet, 11 inches tall, weighed about 170 pounds and was stocky. Police said he was wearing a gray and black hoodless fleece, sweatpants and gray and black gloves.
Officers conducted an area search and a K-9 made a track to an area where a vehicle had been seen earlier, according to the statement. As a precaution, both Williams and Egremont elementary schools were placed on lockdown status for a short period of time, police said.
Credit Union of the Berkshires is the second largest credit union in Pittsfield with more than 2,000 members and assets exceeding $20 million, according to its website.
