Suspects in killing of Thomas Harty face arraignment

NORTHAMPTON, MASS. >> Two suspects in the killing of a 95-year-old Massachusetts man during a home invasion are expected to face a judge.

Prosecutors say 23-year-old Joshua Hart and 27-year-old Brittany Smith are scheduled to be arraigned Friday on murder and other charges in connection with the Oct. 5 death of Thomas Harty.

Harty was killed and his 77-year-old wife seriously injured in their Orange home.

The suspects from Athol, Massachusetts, fled the area and were caught Saturday in a rental truck outside a Walmart in Rockbridge County, Virginia.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive. It wasn't immediately known if the suspects have attorneys.

The Recorder of Greenfield reports that Hart and Smith had been arraigned the day before the killing on car theft related charges and released on personal recognizance.
