SUV strikes, kills 30-year-old Pittsfield man on Center Street
PITTSFIELD -- A 30-year-old city man died after being struck by an SUV on Center Street on Friday.
Pittsfield Police say Michael J. Rathbun was hit while crossing the road at the overpass near Big Y and north of the intersection with Depot Street. He suffered serious head trauma.
Taryn Mancivalano, 54, also of Pittsfield, was the operator of the vehicle, a 2005 Chevrolet Suburban.
City police, Pittsfield Fire Department and department medics and County Ambulance Service responded to a call reporting the accident at 5:45 p.m.
First responders treated Rathbun at the scene but he died shortly after arrival in the Emergency Department at Berkshire Medical Center.
Rathbun becomes the third motor vehicle fatality this week in the city. Ernest Duck Jr., 37, and Tariq Salley, 34, both of Pittsfield, died after Duck crashed his vehicle on East Street near Pittsfield High School on Tuesday afternoon.
At the scene, plastic bags and numerous items were strewn about the roadway, prompting onlookers to speculate that the victim had just left Big Y or another nearby store.
Police remained at the scene investigating for hours. A Pittsfield Police Department press release said the crash remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed or has information about the crash is asked to contact Investigating Officer James McIntyre at (413) 448-9700, ext. 341.
