Swimming: Pittsfield's Murphy, Wahconah's Miller qualify for Western Mass.

PITTSFIELD -- Two swimmers earned Western Mass.-qualifying times, and Pittsfield and Wahconah's girls tied in a dual while the Generals' boys beat the Warriors on Friday at the Boys & Girls Club.

Pittsfield got two wins from Theresa Murphy, and a qualifying time in the 200 individual medley, but had to win the 400 freestyle relay to salvage a 47-47 tie with Wahconah. The Warriors' Kyle Miller won and qualified for Western Mass. in the 100 backstroke and 200 IM, but Pittsfield got two wins from Brian Desrosiers (100 breaststroke with Claudio Velez and 200 free) to earn a 57-35 win.

PHS coach Tim Mazzer said Murphy earned her qualifying time by going out hard in the butterfly portion of the medley.

"She had her best split in the fly, which carried her through," he said. "She was being pushed pretty hard in the 200 IM. That's a great time for her. Now she's qualified in three events: the 100 fly, the 50 free and the 200 IM."

For Wahconah's girls, Juli McBain (100 breast, 200 free) and Michaela DeFoe (50 free, 100 back) were double winners.
