Taconic football runs past St. Joseph, 18-6 in opener

PITTSFIELD -- The bruising running of running back Dylan Moody wore down the St. Joseph defense and gave Taconic’s football team an 18-6 win in its season opener at Wahconah Park.

Moody, the senior captain and former center, said he hadn’t rushed since he was in eighth grade. But with the way handled the ball tonight, breaking tackles and carrying St. Joe defenders, he looked like a natural.

Moody ended the night with 120 yards on 29 carries and three touchdowns. Moody said his young teammates helped him have a solid night.

"I think it was really good for the young guys to get a good look tonight," Moody said. "We had freshmen in their first varsity game that really stepped up and got the job done."

The Braves’ defense put the offense in great positions to score. Moody’s first touchdown was setup after a takeaway by the defense.

Following a St. Joe penalty for a chop block, on first-and-25, the Braves forced a fumble from the Crusaders on the 11.

On the next play, Moody burst right for an touchdown.

Points off turnovers were the theme of the night for the Braves. Their second touchdown was set up by a St. Joe miscue as well.

Penalties continually put St. Joe in a hole. After a three-yard loss by David Lewis, Nate Stump was intercepted by Jake McNeice.

The following drive from Taconic featured a heavy dose of Moody: right, left and up the middle. On the drive, Moody carried it six times for 24 yards, including a seven-yard touchdown. His second score of the day gave his team a 12-0 lead heading into the half.

After halftime, St. Joe started to establish a running game, behind carries from Brendan Faas, Pat Kline and Lewis. But a bad snap led to a turnover on downs by the Crusaders.

Faas, the former soccer player, recovered a fumble from a Taconic ball player, taking the ball 44 yards for a touchdown. The score brought the game to 12-6, but Taconic’s ground game would keep St. Joe from getting any closer.

Moody capped the drive with a 10-yard touchdown with four minutes left.

"This was a great effort," Taconic first-year coach Jim Ziter said. "These guys haven’t beat St. Joe in a lot of years."
