PITTSFIELD — Just four days after suffering a loss to Wahconah, the Taconic golf team had another chance to face the Warriors. This time, the Braves held on for a 175-176 victory.

Mike Kays and Connor Champoux each fired 41s for host Taconic at Berkshire Hills Country Club on Tuesday afternoon. Tim Curry shot a 45 and Ross Omelenchuck turned in a 48 for the Braves (7-2, 7-2 Berkshire North).

For Wahconah, Jon Dos Santos was medalist with a 39. Vinnie Orlandi shot a 45 while Colette Basiliere and Nate Dos Santos each turned in scores of 46 for the Warriors (4-3, 4-3).

"I think they really held it together," Taconic coach Mike Hillman said of his squad. "We talked before the match about grinding every shot out, making sure they focus the whole way around. If they do hit a bad shot, or have a bad hole, they need to re-group. And they did it today."

Taconic had three birdies in the win, as Kays went one-under on No. 8 while Omelenchuck birdied No. 4 and Champoux turned in a birdie on No. 2.

For Wahconah, the lone birdie was scored by Jon Dos Santos on No. 8

"I was playing it shot-by-shot," Jon Dos Santos said. "My coach and I have been working really hard on staying present.

"I hit seven greens today — and the two I missed, I doubled. I had a birdie, but that's the price you pay. I just have to stay present."

Going back to Friday's action, Wahconah escaped with a 179-183 win over Taconic in Dalton. But the Braves' win on Tuesday puts the team alone in first in the Berkshire North division, just ahead of Pittsfield, Mount Greylock, Wahconah and Hoosac Valley.

But there is still work to be done for Taconic.

"176 is a little higher than our normal score," Hillman said. "Especially at home. But it worked out today and it felt good to beat Wahconah since we lost to them last week."

In the event of a tiebreaker, Taconic would have lost. Therefore, the Braves couldn't spare even one more shot.

"You miss a six-inch putt, you go to the tiebreaker, and we would have ended up losing," Hillman said. "You stress that you've got to stay focused on every shot."

Taconic, needing only one more win to qualify for Western Mass., hosts Mount Greylock on Oct. 4. Wahconah is at Pittsfield the same day.

Wahconah (176) — Jon Dos Santos 39, Vinnie Orlandi 45, Colette Basiliere 46, Noah Braci 47, Nate Dos Santos 46, Sam Clayton 47.
