Tanglewood adds concert in September

Wednesday May 16, 2012

Tanglewood has filled in the second of three open dates on its Labor Day weekend schedule with an additional summer appearance by the Boston Pops and guests Michael Feinstein, pianist, singer and curator of the "Great American Songbook," and Broadway vocalist Christine Ebersole, Tony-award winning star of "Grey Gardens."

At the Sunday, Sept. 2, matinee, guest conductor Thomas Wilkins, who leads the BSO's family and youth concerts, will offer a program of pop standards and show tunes. Feinstein, a PBS-TV regular, has performed at Boston's Symphony Hall, New York's Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, the White House and Buckingham Palace.

Still to be announced is an event for Saturday, Sept. 1, to join a holiday-weekend lineup that includes pop-rock band Train on Friday, Aug. 31

Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis will also appear with his quintet at Ozawa Hall on Monday, Aug. 20, replacing a Christian McBride Trio performance the previous night. Instead, the McBride group will open for Marsalis.

The last reunion: For 25 years, until it folded in 1978, Hans and Ruth Maeder's Stockbridge School (later the site of the now-defunct DeSisto School) attracted a roster of notable students, including folksinger Arlo Guthrie (Class of ‘65).

This weekend, as many as 90 alums will gather for what organizer Barbara Cohen-Hobbs expects will be their final reunion. It will be held at the Red Lion Inn and will include graduates from as far away as Israel and Sweden.

Weekend activities for invited guests include a Stockbridge Library ceremony Saturday morning at 11 honoring the co-founders -- a statue of the Maeders will be accepted by archives curator Barbara Allen -- and a noon lunch at Arlo's Church in Great Barrington. We're reminded by Hobbs-Cohen that teachers at the school included Ray and Alice Brock (of "Alice's Restaurant" fame).

A banquet at the Red Lion is set for Saturday evening and a concert and breakfast buffet with tales from the past follows on Sunday morning.

"Our high school experience remains at the core of who we are and how we help to create a better world," said Cohen-Hobbs, a longtime Stockbridge resident who's on the ballot for a Select Board seat at next Tuesday's annual town election.

Documentary debut: "Never Stand Still: Dancing at Jacob's Pillow," the dance documentary filmed at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in Becket over many seasons, will have its theatrical premiere at The Quad Cinema in New York City on Friday.

The film was made by Ron Honsa and is narrated by Bill T. Jones. Jacob's Pillow is two months away from celebrating its 80th anniversary season. To learn more, visit www.jacobspillow.org. To see the documentary film trailer, go to http://bit.ly/HvpIFF.

Certified hens: Ticketyboo Farm of nearby Ghent, N.Y., has been awarded the highest animal welfare certification by Consumer Reports and World Society for the Protection of Animals.

The farm's laying hens have been certified as Animal Welfare Ap proved. This certification and food label lets consumers know that these animals were raised in accordance with the highest animal welfare standards in the U.S., using sustainable agriculture methods on an independent family farm.

In 2011, Anna and Adam Hodson left their urban life in New York City to farm, grow vegetables and raise hens at Ticketyboo. Starting with 10 hens, their flock has now grown to 65, a mixture of different breeds of laying hens.

The Hodsons' hens range freely on pasture all year round, supplementing their diet of pasture plants and bugs with local certified organic feed.
